‘Bubble mongers’ thwarted

That’s the message from a Financial Post analysis of the housing market. We’ve been saying this at Coverings for years now, quite literally. Other “experts” have been predicting the bursting of Canada’s so-called housing bubble, yet the housing and construction sectors have been amazingly resilient — and consistently so. In other words, if there is some kind of a housing bubble, we have yet to see it — maybe because it doesn’t exist. … [Read More...]

Domotex Russia is rescheduled

HANOVER/MOSCOW — Domotex Russia has been rescheduled for the spring of 2014. This second version of the tradeshow for carpets and floorcoverings will now be held April 1 - 3, 2014, instead of Sept. 25 - 27, 2013, as originally planned. The venue has also changed, with Deutsche Messe Rus now staging the fair at the Artplay Design Center in Moscow instead of Moscow’s Crocus Expo International Exhibition Center. “Many participating companies had requested that the fair be moved to the later … [Read More...]

The basics: Marketing for Canadian flooring businesses

There is an old adage in business: What good is your product or service if nobody knows about it? It partly explains why marketing exists in the first place — to help businesses get access to their target market. In fewer industries is this challenge more apparent than in Canadian flooring, where retailers, dealers and other providers face the daunting task of reaching their intended … Read More...

Safety in flooring installations

Take the right time, right jobs, right precautions The topic of safety may seem straightforward in many industries, but not so in flooring. Roof workers and window cleaners need to worry about working in elevated workspaces. Machinery operators need to know the dangers of working their machines in narrow spaces. But in flooring, there is no one kind of flooring project involving one kind of … Read More...

INSTALLATION

‘Seams’ like trouble

Teamwork and knowledge can ensure customer satisfaction By Christopher Capobianco Seams in floor coverings — whether carpet or resilient — cause more concern for customers and more potential complaints for installers than any other aspect of a floor covering installation. I can’t count how many questions I’ve had to field about seams – all the way back to the 1970s when I worked as … Read More...

The term resilient not only applies to a product category, but to the enduring and resurging popularity of products such as homogeneous cork tile.

Resilient flooring

More variety means more challenges By Christopher Capobianco I’ve been around resilient flooring for most of my life and throughout my 35-year career, so when I read reports that resilient is one of the hottest categories in floorcoverings, it makes me smile. However, it’s more than just vinyl these days, so installers and dealers need to pay attention to the details to be sure of … Read More...

Installation Q&A

Unique insight into common issues and concerns By Christopher Capobianco I field a lot of questions from readers of my columns, people who find me on the internet, architects, dealers and installers that I meet in my travels. Here are a few I thought would be of interest. If you have more questions, please let me hear from you. I’ll get the answer and run it in a future Q&A column. Q: … Read More...
